Welcome to my Blog
Up and coming trips
May 2018 Marrakesh, Morocco short break trip. Expecting some good shots.
October 2018 - the big trip !!!!. South America bound for 3 weeks. Two self drives in Chile (the lake district and patagonia) followed by Iguzu Falls and finish off with 4 days in Rio. Cant wait.
Great trip. Wonderful street food. Destinations included Singapore, Kuching (borneo), Kuala Lumpar (Twin towers and bird park interesting but that was about it - what a lot of concrete), Georgetown in Penang, Langkawi and finally Melacca (UESCO world heritage site. Pictures can be seen here.
October 2017 Hull & York
Few nice images of Hull city of culture and York in Autumnal sun
Even more chuffed as I won the August Competition
Delighted that my image of u-bein bridge was shortlisted in this months Guardian Travel Photography Competition
July 2017 - Amsterdam
A Short break in Amsterdam from Hull
May 2017 - Umbria Italy
Always good for photography
Electric car hire interesting too
January 2017 - Kenya
Back to Kenya with Patchworking Against Poverty - our 4th medical camp in Kisii area.
November 2016 - Namibia
2 weeks, 3000km road trip in Namibia
Great sights and a great place for photography
Tested my wildlife photography skills.
October 2016 - Durham
A visit to Durham (for my effort in the Great North Run)
Some nice pictures
September 2016 - Lisbon
Good trip to Lisbon with good company and my new Canon 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM Lens
Amazing the difference in quality with a L lens
I have updated this site, tidying up some of the collections and galleries, created some online exhibitions including one for my digital pinhole images.
Still more to do though
Just found this app - great aid if you are into landscape photography - photpills
Looking at lens upgrade for my workhorse lens
Seriously considering the Canon 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM Lens - bit pricey but quality is outstanding
June 2016 - France
4 weeks travelling through France
Unfortunately such a lot of rain in June - although it did offer some interesting image opportunities in Bordeaux - see here
My mini-project for the trip was to seek out images of the amazing signs in french towns - shops, cafes etc - I have put them into a collection here.
A weekend in Buxton for walks and bike rides in the Peak District.
More shots of Lincolnshire coast - Cleethorpes and Mablethorpe
More images from London including the British Museum (though embargoed for commercial use :( )
May 2016 - Riga
A few days with friends in Riga, Latvia. Such a nice place and people. I suspect we visited just before the summer season started as nice and quiet and it was mid week. The indoor market is worth a visit or two as its the largest in Northern Europe. A 30 min trip on the train for a few euros to Jurmala on the coast is a good value especially if you hire bikes for a couple of hours and finished with a beer or two and a curry at Sue's Asia restaurant (avoid the fish curry through - salmon does not make a good curry).
Did I mention they brew excellent real ales too !. Images here.
April 2016 - New Forest
A family week in the New Forest at Lymington. Not a lot of images this time but Bournemouth Pier is worth a visit with your camera.
Watch out for parking fines :(
December 2015 - Liverpool
Few days in Liverpool. The regenerated dock area although clearly tourist targeted is great for night shots - see here.
October 2015 - Bhutan and Nepal - A truly amazing experience.
Walking in Bhutan. Unique photo opportunities - see here - including the famous Tigers Nest cliff face monastery. Roads (or the single east-west road across the country to be accurate) are an experience. Its not a gastronomic or high end luxury holiday, I didn't expect that, but it is an amazing place with such hospitable people. Considering 10-20 years ago this was a closed country and almost medieval culture.
Short visit to Kathmandu, Nepal - again no shortage of photographic material here, followed by a few days at Chitwan National Park for jungle safari - no tigers but elephants and crocs.
September 2015 - Kenya
Kenya - 2015 Kisii medical camp Kenya. Another successful trip for Patchworking Against Poverty, 2,000 - 3,000 patients seen in just 6 days in some very remote locations in the beautiful Kenyan Highlands.
May 2015 - Paris
Paris short trip. Best image here has to be from the top of the Montparnasse Tower at night. Second attempt due to weather. Took about 20 min and a bucketfull of shots to get what I wanted - thanks to endless troops of far eastern tourists who insist on walking everywhere with iPhone torch lights on. You are on the top of the building which is very high and very windy and surrounded by a "glass" wall. SO you do need a good tripod and you don't need you own (or anyone else's) flash !.
March 2015 - Iceland
Iceland short trip. Ice, rain, wind snow and some sunshine - but I still thought it was great and must go back spend longer and secure a lot more Icelandic images.
So challenging conditions but a few good shots I think click here. Reykjavik good for eating (expensive) and drinking but limited otherwise.
At last images from an amazing trip to the Galapagos islands processed and posted here (and uploaded to Almay). Just need to finish off Quito images now. Short week in Yorkshire Dales - great walks and a few good shots of snowy dales landscapes - wind chill made it feel like -10C
NEW CAMERA - at last I have traded in my old faithful canon 5d mk1 for a new canon 6d - great piece of kit. Really looking forward to working with high ISO in low light to work quality images - not the 5d Mk1 strong point.
January 2015 - Dublin
4 days in Dublin. Cold but winter sun gave me some nice shots I am pleased with. See the Ireland collection.
December 2014 - Galapagos & Quito
Wonderful trip to the unique Galapagos Islands via Quito in Equador. Loads of superb images processed !
Celebrity Cruises were excellent even for us non-cruise going types.
Galapagos is everything your expect and a bit more.
Watch out for the altitude sickness on return to Quito from sea level Galapagos.
Click here for Galapagos Images and Quito Images.
June 2014 - Lake Garda Italy
28th February 2014 - Oman
Well got back from 12 days in Oman on 15 Feb. What an interesting country. Oil Rich, Sultan Ruled, Vast empty areas containing mountains, rock or dessert, massive migrant workforce. Photographywise it was an interesting trip a few good images but struggled to find anything absolutely stunning. Unfortunately we did not have the car whilst staying in Muscat as there are probably some good low light shots of some of the very ostentatious government buildings that abound in the capital. I had a strong feeling of a country which will struggle to maintain the status quo with its high dependance on oil revenues and migrant workers and although a strongly committed islamic state the wider worldwide and western influences will inevitably have an impact.
There are clear commercial pressures to exploit the tourist market with over luxuriant hotels charging extortionate prices. Disappointed to hear that the limited number of B&Bs in Muscat are now all required to close.
Worth the trip though and recommend a couple of days in the Wahabi Sands Desert in a 4x4 Landcruiser. Get to Nizwa early Friday morning for the traditional cattle market - worth getting up early for.
Would recommend Oman Holiday Architects though - excellent service. Cant say the same for Emirates airlines - not their finest hour this time.
